13/02/2013, Prof. Stefan Bock (University of Paderborn), on "A Pro-Active Real-Rime Control Approach for Urgent Deliveries"

 Abstract

This talk proposes a new pro-active real-time control approach for dynamic vehicle routing problems in which the urgent delivery of goods is of utmost importance. By analyzing and clustering given past request data, stochastic knowledge about future request arrivals is generated in an offline step. This knowledge is integrated into an adaptive real-time control approach in order to pro-actively guide vehicles to request-likely areas before real requests arrive there. Plan adaptations are conducted by the application of a sophisticated Tabu Search approach that uses variable neighborhood operators. Detailed analyses of simulated instances identify structural diversity as a crucial criterion for classifying the quality of stochastic knowledge exploitable from past request information. The efficiency of these instruments is evaluated by a direct comparison with a pure deterministic reactive approach on test scenarios with varying structural diversity. Thanks to the proposed classification of structural diversity, differences in results obtained among the tested scenarios become explainable.
