06/03/2013, Prof. Eric Kearney (GISMA Business School), on "The Future of Leadership-What Will It Look Like?"

 Abstract

As the world changes, so do the demands on leaders. Many leadership behaviors that may have been reasonably effective in the past are becoming ineffective in motivating and getting the most out of today's workforce. New solutions are required for the challenges of the future, most prominent among which are increasing internationalization and diversity, greater competition and time pressure, and the need to constantly innovate. GISMA Professor Eric Kearney explores an emerging theory of leadership that addresses how effective leaders must meet seemingly opposing demands simultaneously to achieve beneficial results.

Biography

Prof. Dr. Eric Kearney is Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at GISMA Business School / Leibniz Universität Hannover. In his research, he examines how leadership and teamwork contribute to organizational effectiveness. For example, he investigates what leaders must do to ensure that teams create synergies (process gains) such that performance is better than could be expected on the basis of the respective individuals' competencies alone. In other words, he studies when and how in teams the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (rather than less, which is also often the case). Professor Kearney frequently studies the conditions under which diversity (e.g., with respect to demographic variables such as age, gender, and culture or with respect to job-related variables such as functional and educational background) becomes an asset, rather than a liability for a team. Professor Kearney's research has been published in leading OB/HR outlets such as the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science, and Organizational Research Methods.
